I am now accepting floral painting commissions.

There’s something timeless and deeply expressive about painting flowers. Each bloom carries its own personality—soft and delicate, bold and vibrant, fleeting yet full of life. I love capturing the way light dances on petals, the richness of color, and the quiet elegance that flowers bring to a space. With oil paint, I can build layers of texture and depth, creating pieces that feel almost alive. Painting flowers allows me to celebrate nature’s beauty in a way that lasts forever.

A Hidden Message

At first glance you would never see it, but can you see the words hidden within the texture of these paintings? I presented “Yellow Flowers” to my wife on our wedding day, January 19th, 2002. To this day it is one of her most valuable possessions. Not only is it a beautiful oil painting to look at, but it is a story. It is a message of love that we have enjoyed for over 20 years. It is also a conversation piece. Jana loves to show it to people. She tells them that it was a wedding gift that I gave her on that special day. She then ask if they can see the message.

What message would you include in your commissioned painting? What would it mean to you? What story would it tell?

    1. Phone consultation with the artist.

    2. Verbal agreement is made on subject, size, and price.

    3. Digital composition designed by artist is presented to client.

    4. If client and artist both decide to go forward with commission a written contract is signed by both.

    5. Client pays 50% up front prior to artist starting physical painting.

    6. Artist completes painting.

    7. Client pays remaining 50% balance and receives completed painting.

    8. Client hangs work in visible location and has bragging rights that they own an original Scott Beckman oil painting, all while their investment increases in value.

  • Every painting is different, so it is impossible to come up with an exact timeline. There are several factors to consider, but the two main ones are how many commissions are ahead of yours and the size of the painting. A 30”x 40” painting will take approximately 100 hours to complete once the concept has been agreed upon and the paint starts being applied to the canvas. Once it is complete, the painting will take 2-4 weeks to dry. This would put the turn-around on a 30”x40” painting at approximately 4-6 weeks assuming there are no commissions ahead of yours, and not including shipping/delivery.

During the stage in the commission process, when the written contract is made, the client will have an agreed upon completion time in writing. The contract would also include the clients options if the artist can not meet the deadline.

In a time crunch? Is this a gift you need sooner? If so, for an extra charge you can purchase an original black and white graphite drawing of the planned painting that can be presented with the promise of the painting to come.

  • What will Scott be painting? This will be a collaberation between the client and the artist. The best works of art come from inspiration deep within the artist as they create. Without this, the final product would be missing that special something that all great works of art have. This is why Scott reserves the right to turn down any requested commissions that do not inspire him.

“I won’t start a painting that I am not willing to hang in my living room when it is complete.”

Scott often works from multiple photographs to make a single painting. As the client, you can present photographs that are not copyright or that you have taken yourself. For example, your 10th wedding anniversary is coming up and you would like to commission a painting of your wedding flowers taken by the professional photographer. Even though you paid for that image, it is copyright. You will have to get written permission from the person that took the photo for it to be used in the painting.

Photo’s are not required though, what kind of flowers were at the wedding? What colors were they? Let Scott compose a composition based off of this information. It will be presented to you prior to the deposit.

Scott also has some great photographs he has taken in the past of flowers. Choose from one of these. What is your favorite color? Let him find the flower to fit your descriptions.

  • Oil paint has been the preferred medium of master artists for centuries. Prized for its rich pigments, depth, and longevity. Unlike other paints, oil allows for smooth blending and intricate detail, making it the medium of choice for iconic works like The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh and Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer. Its slow drying time gives the artist flexibility to build layers, create depth and add luminosity unmatched by other mediums. Perhaps most importantly, oil paintings are true heirlooms—many masterpieces from the Renaissance and beyond have survived for hundreds of years, their colors still vibrant and their details preserved. When properly cared for, an oil painting is not just a piece of art but a legacy that can be passed down for generations.

Oil paintings by Scott Beckman are typically touch dry within 2-4 weeks. At this point a temporary protective varnish called retouch varnish can be applied prior to delivery of the art to the client. Oil paint can take 6 months to a year to be fully dry. After the painting is fully dry a final varnish is recommended.

  • Why would it be a disservice to discount original art? Unlike the mass reproduced art found at big box craft stores, original art is an investment. It is a one of a kind work that the artist puts their heart and soul into. There is no experience like looking at an original work of art and being taken back in time to the moment the artist laid the brush strokes on the canvas. You can see the texture and feel the emotion. A printer or a computer screen cannot recreate this. With the invention of AI we are going to see more and more emotionless, mass produced art around every corner, making hand crafted human created art even more valuable.

When you commission an original oil painting from me, know that I will put everything I have into it. I will be just as passionate about it as you are. Also know that you are not just buying a pretty picture to hang on your wall. You are buying the centerpiece to the space you choose to display your investment in. An investment that will only rise in value and not be discounted in the future.

Let’s create art together.
